Flux I
(2000),
The Georgia Museum of Art,
Athens, GA
Installed on large, floor-to-ceiling window on the landing of the museums main staircase, Flux
I redefined the central artery of movement within the building. Moving toward the staircase,
the viewer could see the entire composition, which then appeared from other vantage points as the
viewer moved up the staircase and away from the window. The works title, which refers to movement and
change, emphasizes the multiple states the work took on as the viewer moved through the space. Sirlins
distinctly contemporary abstraction was juxtaposed ironically with the museums 19th century statuary.
Brightly colored light filtered through the installation, altering the interior of the building and the statues
as it fell on them, putting the museums interior, collection, and institutional identity into
flux.
